DatOllin Project - INQUA
OLLIN is in Aztec belief, related to the earthquakes. This project title DatOI: Dating OLLIN, was chosen because it aims to gather students and scientists working on earthquake geology in Latin America around the concept of dating earthquake activity. To this end, we are organizing a week of training in Ecuador at the University of IKIAM in Fall 2025. The main beneficiaries will be scientists (students and researchers) that want to enhance skills and create collaboration especially in order to use quaternary dating for their study. The main themes will be cosmogenic isotope and luminescence dating,with theoretical and practical courses adapted to the challenges of dating in Latin America. This training school is funded by INQUA (Project 2515 s-y ISA), UNESCO-OLLIN (IGCP 669) and Ikiam Univ.

The background of this proposal is related to the Unesco OLLIN project, which has been setting up a new collaborative framework between specialists and young researchers from both sides of the Atlantic to improve geological knowledge and seismic hazard assessment (SHA) of populated regions of Latin America. OLLIN was a success because the network members have raised to 122, organized summer school, allowed the participation in the InQUA congress for students and researchers …
Thanks to this project, there is now a motivation to keep maintaining this effort and also focusing on quaternary dating for active faults studies.
The rationale of focusing on quaternary dating and morphotectonic studies is because it yields slip rates and paleoseismological calendar that are major inputs in seismic hazard assessment (i.e. Morell et al., 2020). In addition in Latin America although radiocarbon dating is commonly used, cosmogenic and palaeo-dosimetric dating (such as Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR)) are rarely used. Yet, these methods allow many sites to be temporally constrained where faults have deformed geomorphological markers that don't contain charcoals (i.e., alluvial terraces, moraines, debris flows). This project aims thus to enhance skills of developing country students and researchers from Latin America in the use of cosmogenic and palaeo-dosimetric dating on faulted markers. In addition, it also aims to communicate with seismic hazard modelers from Latin America about the uncertainties behind those dating and thus slip rates which they use and need.
We thus propose to organize summer school in Latin America that focuses on this topic. This will thus 1) enhance the skill in quaternary dating, 2) encouraging networking between researchers, 3) exchanges of cosmogenic and palaeo-dosimetric dating sampling techniques 4) communicate about the uncertainties of the dating and consequences on seismic hazard modeling 5) trying to set up an official teaching module in a latin american university, and 6) start discussions about a study case fieldwork area.

Project Leaders

Oswaldo Guzmán
PhD Oswaldo Guzmán is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Earth and Water Sciences at Universidad Regional Amazónica Ikiam, Ecuador. His research centers on understanding the geomorphological evolution of landscapes and their relationships with active tectonics, climate, and eustasy. He combines morphotectonic, paleoseismological, and geochronological approaches to characterize active faults. He has conducted research in the Andes of Venezuela, Albania, the Iberian Peninsula, and most recently, the Ecuadorian Amazon.

​Léa POUSSE-BELTRAN
Léa is a PhD researcher employed by the IRD (Research Institute for Development) hosted in ISTerre in France (Institute of Earth Sciences). Her research focuses on active faults, in particular the spatio-temporal variation of fault activity. She uses morphotectonic, geochronological and InSAR approaches to characterize active faults. She has conducted research in Venezuela, Mexico and Italy.
